“Braiding Sweetgrass is a book that touches and enriches on many levels. Robin Wall Kimmerer succeeds in weaving botanical expertise, personal experiences, and philosophical reflections into a dense yet wonderfully accessible story. When reading, it is easy to lose oneself in Kimmerer's narratives and often only realize how much one has learned about plants and ecological relationships when a concluding analogy or insight impressively ties together what one has read. With this book, Kimmerer gives space to a perspective that is often overlooked, simplified, or romanticized in Western environmental debate. She presents Indigenous knowledge not as opposed to science, but as an equal, complementary form of understanding. Braiding Sweetgrass is highly recommended for anyone who loves stories told in richly detailed language and who is fascinated by the complexity and beauty of nature.”

There is so much to be learned about gratitude in this book, and Kimmerer's poetic-prose will help you find wonder in the world again. Read by the author, it's one book that can teach a bit of something to everyone. ”

“One of the best books ever written about humans and the natural world, and our responsibility to it. Kimmerer is a Native botanist, and with such soothing and beautiful tones walks us through the lessons learned from her people about caring for, being stewards of, and sharing knowledge of nature. She considers things like the ethical harvest, or how to take gently and carefully from the Earth; how to take up space in the world without depriving nature of doing its thing; and so much more. Admittedly, a very slow listen, but a lovely oneโeasy to pick up again if you take time off from it. ”

“A must-read for everyone in the physical and environmental sciences, and a highly-encouraged read for everyone else. This book is a reminder to act small but dream big, to give more than you take, and to choose hope over cynicism. 'For what good is knowing unless it is coupled with caring? Science can give us knowing, but caring comes from someplace else.' ”

“This book is life-changing and world-changing. It is the type of book you borrow from your neighbor, you loan to your friend, you share with a parent. This book is a grassroots movement of ecological empathy and imagination. Robin Wall Kimmerer dares us to reexamine our relationships to science, reconsider our ideals of community, and revisit how to cultivate the world we want to share with future (and past) generations.”

“Indigenous wisdom meets scientific theory in this memoir by Robin Wall Kimmerer. A botanist and member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation, Kimmerer offers a more positive and hopeful approach to healing the vital relationship between people and nature in a time when the climate crisis feels too overwhelming to overcome.”

Summary
As a botanist and professor of plant ecology, Robin Wall Kimmerer has spent a career learning how to ask questions of nature using the tools of science. As a Potawatomi woman, she learned from elders, family, and history that the Potawatomi, as well as a majority of other cultures indigenous to this land, consider plants and animals to be our oldest teachers. In Braiding Sweetgrass, Kimmerer brings these two lenses of knowing together to reveal what it means to see humans as "the younger brothers of creation." As she explores these themes, she circles toward a central argument: The awakening of a wider ecological consciousness requires the acknowledgement and celebration of our reciprocal relationship with the world. Once we begin to listen for the languages of other beings, we can begin to understand the innumerable life-giving gifts the world provides us and learn to offer our thanks, our care, and our own gifts in return.
