“Ah, the book that everyone is talking about. I had to try it. As a person who had a troublesome relationship with my own mother (not as troubling at Jeanette's), I took comfort in Jeanette's journey into learning to heal and make peace with mother's actions. It is a hard book to listen to, but Jeanette's honest and head-on approach made me keep listening. As I've told others, don't let the title put you off. Being around my own mother and dealing with her was mental and physically exhausting. There are days I am glad my mom died, but I still love her. And like Jeanette, I've learned that not all mothers deserve the pedestal they've been placed on.”

“This is such a heavy and wonderful story. A rollercoaster of emotions with a light at the end of a very long and windy tunnel. Jennette McCurdy is such a strong woman, and even without knowing her personally, her story has made me so proud of who she has become and how far she has gotten. Very personal stories that are quite tragic, to super silly and comedic stories that'll probably have you laughing out loud. You will not regret this listen! ”

“From the eyes and experiences of a child-actress, Jennette McCurdy recounts her life with a heavy focus on how her mother developed, impacted, and controlled it. It’s a fascinating and heavy read, and the lasting effect it leaves will make you really think about how you view celebrities. They are just as human as everyone else and the lasting thought this book leaves is: 'I wish her the best'. ”

“Nickelodeon star Jennette McCurdy’s memoir of a childhood spent in the spotlight and under the thumb of her abusively controlling, narcissistic, cancer-surviving, Mormon mother is as bitterly funny as it is brutally honest. You will rage, cringe, gasp, cheer, laugh, literally scream out loud, hope against hope, and ultimately just root for McCurdy as she struggles to recover and reclaim her life. A triumph of real life horror, humor, and healing. ”

“Woah! There is so much to unpack here. I put on the audiobook and finished it in two days because I just couldn't stop listening. I didn't grow up watching iCarly—coincidentally because I grew up Mormon—but Jennette McCurdy's memoir will strike a chord (many chords) with anyone who reads it. We could all do with a little more understanding on what it's like to be a child star, to have an abusive mother, to experience religious trauma, and to live with eating disorders and addiction. McCurdy tackles these subjects with the sensitivity of someone who understands while also being frank about how these experiences have affected and continue to affect her life. (And, if anyone is wondering, yes. That is how most Mormons think of the Holy Ghost.)”

“Wonderful read that draws you in with its intensity. While a lot of the content is heavy, there's an unflinching honesty about this memoir that is resounding and deeply touching. Not for the faint of heart (TW: eating disorders, child abuse, religious trauma)”

“This is one of the relatively few books that I explicitly recommend as an audiobook, because the book itself and the writing are phenomenal, but there is something in McCurdy's own recounting of her experience that makes the audio a must-listen. As much as the book itself is simply quality (which in retrospect makes me even more upset as to how her mother curtailed her creative pursuits) and dryly funny throughout, McCurdy's emotions are laden in her voice, especially as the story goes into darker and more vulnerable areas. However you may feel about the use of pathos in such a way, I do genuinely recommend this as a listen for those who can stand such a brutal recounting of a brutally complex relationship. ”

“Such a great author-narrated memoir. It was like listening to a good friend tell a harrowing true story: you don’t want it to end, but you desperately want your friend to have a happy ending. It’s well-written and engaging and has important lessons about boundaries and difficult relationships. ”

“The audiobook is narrated by Jennette, which I think made the experience of reading this even more special. I went through just about every emotion while reading this book. Jennette goes into great detail on her experience as a child actor…and based on the title of this book, I think you can guess how that experience was. This gripping, shocking, emotional memoir will surely keep you on the edge of your seat. I’m Glad My Mom Died is a 2022 must read. TW’s: Eating Disorders, Physical and Emotional Abuse, Domestic Abuse, Sexual Abuse ”

“There is something about listening to a memoir narrated by the person who wrote it that makes one’s experience feel complete. McCurdy’s writing 'voice' and actual one give dry humor and a low folksy charm while describing truly harrowing abuses from her mother. She doesn’t hold anything back whether it’s her time on set on iCarly to her first sexual experience to the description of her vomit after a binge and purge. If you wanted a fun celebrity tell-all…this ain’t it. This is a survivor’s story.”

“This book shines a light on the trauma involved with the child star industry, compelling form start to finish. Made me very thankful for my Mum.”

“A phenomenal memoir that details the strengths of the author and her raging against the system that so harshly affects child stars, including those who enable them. Incredibly well written and fantastic to listen to. ”

* #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER * #1 INTERNATIONAL BESTSELLER * MORE THAN 3 MILLION COPIES SOLD! A heartbreaking and hilarious memoir by iCarly and Sam & Cat star Jennette McCurdy about her struggles as a former child actor—including eating disorders, addiction, and a complicated relationship with her overbearing mother—and how she retook control of her life. Jennette McCurdy was six years old when she had her first acting audition. Her mother’s dream was for her only daughter to become a star, and Jennette would do anything to make her mother happy. So she went along with what Mom called “calorie restriction,” eating little and weighing herself five times a day. She endured extensive at-home makeovers while Mom chided, “Your eyelashes are invisible, okay? You think Dakota Fanning doesn’t tint hers?” She was even showered by Mom until age sixteen while sharing her diaries, email, and all her income. In I’m Glad My Mom Died, Jennette recounts all this in unflinching detail—just as she chronicles what happens when the dream finally comes true. Cast in a new Nickelodeon series called iCarly, she is thrust into fame. Though Mom is ecstatic, emailing fan club moderators and getting on a first-name basis with the paparazzi (“Hi Gale!”), Jennette is riddled with anxiety, shame, and self-loathing, which manifest into eating disorders, addiction, and a series of unhealthy relationships. These issues only get worse when, soon after taking the lead in the iCarly spinoff Sam & Cat alongside Ariana Grande, her mother dies of cancer. Finally, after discovering therapy and quitting acting, Jennette embarks on recovery and decides for the first time in her life what she really wants. Told with refreshing candor and dark humor, I’m Glad My Mom Died is an inspiring story of resilience, independence, and the joy of shampooing your own hair.
