“Philip Pullman has a stunningly intimate way of writing characters; their motivations, dreams, deepest fears, personalities, quirks, virtues, and vices come to the surface, making them so, so vivid and alive. As I was reading I was struck by this talent of getting inside his character's minds many, many times. One could just about believe in the truth of a parallel universe in which Lyra and Pantalaimon struggle against the Church and General Oblation Board, travel the world with Gyptians and Lee Scoresby and Iorek Byrnison, and display such inspiring determination and bravery. I've heard a lot of people pit this series against C.S. Lewis's The Chronicles of Narnia, one of my most favorite series and a testament to my childhood love of reading, and at first glance it makes sense why many do. After reading this wonderful book I think this idea is deeply flawed. Someday I'd very much like to write an essay exploring Lucy Pevensie and Lyra Silvertongue - why we need one's wonder and innocence, but just as much the other's passion and cleverness.”
