“How far would you go for the house of your dreams? Margot, the manipulative unlikable and obsessive early 30s narrator schemes and plots her way through her relationship, and hopefully to homeownership, but at what cost? Like watching a train heading towards a cliff. You’re horrified but can’t turn away. ”

“If you love to hate an unhinged, unreliable narrator — meet your new favorite character, Margo. All she's trying to do is snag her Dream Home to ensure her Dream Life comes true. How far is too far when trying to win The House Bidding War Games? A light bit of stalking, trespassing, and amateur sleuthing? All's fair in love and house hunting, right? Readers will physically react to Margo's cringey antics, but will be unable to stop reading until her Master Plan either becomes reality or explodes in her face. Marisa Kashino's debut is a thrilling new voice in the domestic psychological thriller genre. ”

“Oh my goodness. I can’t stop thinking about—or talking about—this book! The heroine, such as she is, goes through about 12 levels of unhinged-ness and although she is ABSOLUTELY NOT OKAY, I couldn’t help but hope she won in the end. Deeply unsettling and darkly hilarious. ”

“What if the housing market was even worse, but you were obsessed with attaining the American Dream no matter the cost? What's a little light stalking and trespassing when you know that a house was destined to belong to you? As you can probably guess, this spiraled out of control very quickly, but it's a fun ride all the way to the end!”

“Best Offer Wins by Marisa Kashino is a delicious psychological thriller told from the point of view of a woman growing increasingly unhinged through the process of trying to buy a house in this market. The best part about it for me is that the first couple of crazy things, I could see why she thought they had to be done. As it went on, I thankfully related less and less. ”

“Margo wants nothing more than to secure the perfect home for her family. She’s unlikable, unreliable, and Gone Girl levels of unhinged, but she knows exactly what she wants, and she’ll do anything to land the house of her dreams. Every time I thought this story got as wild as it could possibly get, something even more shocking happened. I couldn’t put it down! ”

“This takes the cutthroat real estate market to a whole other level! I can't believe this is a debut novel- it was expertly executed and alarmingly realistic. Given the right person, you can see how this could all play out, which was maybe the most disturbing part of this psychological thriller! Our main character is 37-year-old Margo Miyake, and she and her husband, Ian, are stuck in a one-bedroom apartment as they search for the perfect house to finally start and raise their family. But this is the post-COVID real-estate market in the suburbs of DC, and they have lost out on the last 11 offers they've put in. Now, Margo has a lead on a house that hasn't even hit the market yet, and she is determined to do whatever is necessary to get it. An unhinged protagonist and lots of twists will make this book a fast read!! ”

“Starts with a slightly overzealous suburb-ideating lady and gradually escalates in ways you don’t quite notice until it hits you. Excellent writing, masterful weaving of the plot, and a satisfying ending. ”

"Best Offer Wins is a clever, twisted, and hilarious thriller. I finished it in a day because I couldn't stop reading!"—Freida McFadden, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Housemaid"[Narrator Cia] Court shines in her delivery of Margo's extensive inner monologues, projecting both her humor and desperation. As she becomes increasingly single-minded, Court's voice builds on that sinister transformation." — Kirkus (Earphones Award Winner)"Prolific voice actor [Cia] Court...is an effusive, dexterous cipher, providing a riotously convincing performance of a desperate woman—and woe to anyone who gets in her way." — Booklist (Starred Review)An insanely competitive housing market. A desperate buyer on the edge. In Marisa Kashino’s darkly humorous debut novel, Best Offer Wins, the white picket fence becomes the ultimate symbol of success—and obsession. How far would you go for the house of your dreams? Eighteen months and 11 lost bidding wars into house-hunting in the overheated Washington, DC suburbs, 37-year-old publicist Margo Miyake gets a tip about the perfect house, in the perfect neighborhood, slated to come up for sale in one month. Desperate to escape the cramped apartment she shares with her husband Ian — and in turn, get their marriage, plan to have a baby, and whole life back on track — Margo becomes obsessed with buying the house before it’s publicly listed and the masses descend (with unbeatable, all-cash offers in hand).A little stalking? Harmless. A bit of trespassing? Necessary. As Margo infiltrates the homeowners’ lives, her tactics grow increasingly unhinged—but just when she thinks she’s won them over, she hits a snag in her plan. Undeterred, Margo will prove again and again that there’s no boundary she won’t cross to seize the dream life she’s been chasing. The most unsettling part? You’ll root for her, even as you gasp in disbelief.Dark, biting, and laugh-out-loud funny, Best Offer Wins is a propulsive debut and a razor-sharp exploration of class, ambition, and the modern housing crisis.A Macmillan Audio production from Celadon Books

Reviews
“Not since Gone Girl have I been so gripped by a narrative voice. This is a tale of blackest comedy, spiralling obsession and ultimate horror. By turns laugh-out-loud funny and appalling, Marisa Kashino asks how far you would go to secure your dream house, then goes several steps further than you would ever dare. Compulsive and unputdownable. Highly recommended.”
—Alex Michaelides, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Silent Patient and The Fury
"Darkly satirical and wildly entertaining, Best Offer Wins is a riveting thriller from the first page to the last. Who knew that buying a house could be so fun and twisted?"
—Amy Tintera, New York Times bestselling author of Listen for the Lie
"Best Offer Wins is a page-turning blend of cringey and compulsive that had my jaw dropping on nearly every other page. Kashino cloaks her examination of gender, class, and race expectations in a twisty domestic thriller that had me guessing until the final pages."
—Lottie Hazell, author of Piglet
"Irresistible, elegantly written, and timely as hell, Best Offer Wins puts a sinister spin on today’s cutthroat real estate market. We may not want to root for Margo on her rage-fueled quest, full of dark twists, for her 'dream home,' but her voice is too alluring to refuse."
—Laura Sims, author of Looker and How Can I Help You
"Best Offer Wins takes the thrill of the house hunt and ratchets it up to diabolical levels. Dark, hilarious, and totally gripping, with a jaw-dropping twist that closes the deal."
—Ryan Serhant, CEO and star real estate broker, author of Sell It Like Serhant, producer and star of Netflix’s Owning Manhattan
"Author Kashino, a longtime journalist who covered the real estate market for the Washington Post and Washingtonian magazine, has created in Margo a character as vicious and conniving as the jilted lover played by Glenn Close in Fatal Attraction...Deliciously dark and twistedly funny."
